Why do I need to learn English

The best time to plant a tree was ten years ago, the next best time is now.
English is becoming increasingly important in the tech industry. From my experience, people with strong English skills often receive better offer and position. This is an advantage that cannot be ignored.
I am committed to dedicating time to improving my English, aiming to reach a level close to native speaker.
Oral English is my primary focus:
  • Expression
  • Pronunciation
  • Vocabulary

My current level of English

  • CET-6 (College English Test Band 6)
  • Work experience at international companies:
    • IBM
    • HSBC
    • Amber Group
I regularly read English documents, watch English YouTube videos, take English MOOCs, and write English technical blog.
I subscribed to Time magazine and Harvard Business Review for a period of time.
With the help of Grammarly, I make fewer mistakes when writing in English.
I can communicate in English but sometimes I may use incorrect grammar or pause because I don't have enough vocabulary.

The plan

I don't have a solid grasp of English grammar rules, and I don't plan to focus on them, as I mastered Chinese without formal grammar study.
To keep it simple, I will choose some courses on Coursera, listen to the lectures, and read the transcripts. When I encounter new words or sentences, I'll look them up in the dictionary and note them in my notebook.
How will I know if my oral English is improving? I'll read the transcript aloud, record my voice, then use speech-to-text software to convert the recording back into text. I'll compare this text with the original transcript.
I want to keep the learning process as transparent as possible.
The program’s time range is 6-12 months. However, it is something that requires lifelong learning. I'm just going to focus on it for a while and let’s see what I can achieve.
And that's it!

Tools I will use

  • Coursera for content
  • Grammarly for grammar checking
  • DeepL and Youdao Dictionary for translation
  • ChatGPT help to review and polish
  • Speech-to-text software to convert voice to text (still deciding which one to use)
